Race report - Round 1
Well, here we were again, gathered for the eagerly awaited round 1 of DBs 1966-71 Cassic Sports series, and there is always some extra excitement when it comes to this series for most, as this series represents an era of some of the most stunning looking racing cars ever built.
The makes & models lines up on the grid this week read like a greatest sports racing car of all time list:
And the pre-race grid shot highlighted this wonderfully.
The only thing left was to put these classics into battle & see if 1:32 racing imitated 1:1
As it turned out….no
Whilst Eric Broadleys masterpiece, the Lola T70 was a wonderful 1:1 racing car, and a stunning looking piece of kit, in real life it didn’t quite have the speed to cope with the likes of Ford, Ferrari…or even Porsche at the time.
However, with the design of the Thunderslot version for 1:32 racing, it has certainly been a revelation among the commercial plastic chassied slot cars in recent years. And so it proved again in round 1 of this series.
Sitting atop the results this week on 96 laps was Callan Thomas in the Chris Craft Lola T70 with very little effort it seemed, despite Callans usual whinging whenever he happens to be drawn to be up first!
1 lap back in 2nd (& lucky to be that close) was the writers own T70 with Denny Hulme at the wheel and a total of 95 laps. Final spot on the podium was Phil in the newly made for the series GT40 on 90 laps, but with lap times not far short of the T70s, a promising start.
Rob Golley was the unlucky 4th placegetter this week in the hippy liveried Porsche 917. He matched Phils effort of 90 laps, but just missed out on the podium on Track position. Certainly a quick enough start for Rob though.
This was the first of the tied lap battles in the round, but it certainly wasn’t the last. The battle for 5th & 6th was even closer with DB & Ben both notching up 89 laps, and also finishing at exactly the same spot on the track, so it was a shared 5th position for them this week.
Schoee & Bruce Thomas also fought out another close battle for the next 2 spots with each finishing on 88 laps. However, it was Schoee in the rapid Porsche 908 who locked in 7th on track ahead of Bruce in the wonderful looking Chaparral 2F in 8th.
Alone in 9th on 87 laps was Scott in another 908, 1 lap to the good of Caine in Phils 2nd Ford, a MKIV, which was as quick as expected & finished up 10th on 86 laps.
Rhys racked up 84 laps for 11th, 3 laps clear of JB in 12th on 81, with Tom in 13th this week on his total of 65 laps.
All go for next week at Gotham Park.

Race Report - Round 6
The penultimate round of the 66-71 Classic Sport series, and it is with a tinge of sadness that we’ll be saying goodbye to these wonderful looking cars from a wonderful era of racing soon. However, there are still 2 rounds to go & a series to be decided. Well, there was. After this weeks round, the series has pretty much already been decided and only a no show in the final round (or a car disaster) will prevent another Callan Thomas domination.
This week was at least slightly closer than last with Callans winning total of 95 laps just 1 lap clear of the writers own 94. But after equally bad luck striking both drivers (when their controller lost all braking in the final heat), I can’t really complain about any hardship in this result.
Once again, there was a titanic battle for the last pace on the podium, and with Phil, Rob & Schoee all finishing on 91 laps it was, once again, all up to track position to decide finishing position.
Phil took 3rd in the end, from a much improved drive from Rob Golley in 4th. Schoee must have walked under a ladder on his way to the track this week, as he dropped 2 places on track position for the 2nd class on the night.
Bruce’s stunning high winged Chaparral was next in line in 6th, but only after another close battle on 89 laps with DB who ended up 7th (and was much happier about his cars performance compared to last week.)
In 8th, and all alone on 88 laps was Scott, 3 laps clear of Caine on 85.
JB & Rhys fought out the last place in the top 10 with their 84 laps totals, and it was JB who took the bragging rights this week with a new car in 10th with Rhys in 11th
A good run from Luke saw him take out 12th on 80 laps, 1 lap to the good of the unlucky Ben Lewis on 79. Ben was the victim of another car breakdown, and his lap total was shared over 2 cars, which obviously means that his points can’t be allocated for this round.
Next in line was Dave Gray on 69 laps, and finally Blair with his total of 63 laps for the night.

Race report - Round 7
It was with much sadness that this week saw the final round of the series in the 1966-71 classic sports series for this rotation. Well, sadness for some of us anyway. As we’ve mentioned before, the classic sport era had some of the most beautiful cars ever built, and with Dave Bantofts regulations allowing for podded chassis in recent times it also means that the slot car versions of these 1:1 cars are among the fastest & best to drive of all of our clubs classes.
Dave Bantoft might not quite agree however, as his own car has taken quite a while to develop, but in usual DB style, it was looking very smooth & quick by the time we got to this weeks round….round 7 😊
The other reason that might have had DB 2nd guessing his regulations, was the fact this it provided the means for putting one of the fastest cars (Thunderslot Lola) into the hands of one of the fastest drivers (Callan) for the series…..and if it’s one thing Callan does not need, is extra speed & handling in any car he drives!
Which gives us a very clear hint as to how the 6 rounds of the series have progressed so far. Barring a no show, or a car disaster, the series result was not in doubt, but drivers gathered still to play out the last rights & enjoy driving these rockets for the last time (well, for 2 years anyway).
In a surprise to no-one, it was Callan who took out the final round to stamp his authority on the overall result. His total of 97 laps was 3 clear of the next best (myself) with 94 laps in 2nd place for the round & overall.
A good 90 lap run from Schoee was enough for him to take out his 2nd podium for the series in 3rd, ahead of a 2 way battle for 4th & 5th between Phil & Bruce both sharing 88 laps. Phil it was taking out the position on track, & this place was well & truly enough to consolidate his 3rd place in the series.
Rhys was all alone on 86 laps on the night for 6th, just 1 lap clear of DB in 7th on 85 laps.
1 lap also separated 8th, 9th & 10th places with the following drivers finishing in this order. Rob Golley (84), Scott Wyman (83) & John Batich (82).
From there it was 4 laps back to Luke in 11th on 78 laps, Dave Gray12th on 76 & Ben in 13th with 73 very erratic laps.
The good return to racing that Adrian produced in the V8 Supercars earlier in the night, didn’t transpose to this class, and his night ended prematurely with a mechanical failure leading to essentially a DNF this week.
