Race report - Round 1
Officially it was round 1 of the BTCC series after our weeks hiatus, and it was a brightly coloured field of many liveries that greeted the track this week. The presentation of these cars is a highlight of this series, the pace, however, is not.
However, there are always drivers that somehow manage to extract that little bit extra in performance & balance out of their car that can give them the edge in a series like this, and this week was no exception.
The standout performer with his first round win in a while (how long Dave ?) was the very well balanced, & well driven VW of Dave Schofield. Schoee showed excellent pace for this class, and with a very even performance over all 4 heats, took out a very well deserved win with his 97 lap total. Dave even managed to avoid some of the traditional BTCC race carnage that was very reminiscent of the actual 1:1 BTCC series, and which had (at one point) all 4 cars out of the slot or in someone else’s slot at the same time!
Track owner Bruce Thomas was left in Schoee’s wake this week, with his MG’s best only being good enough for 2nd place, 1 lap back on 96 laps. Rounding out the top 3 was another VW of JB who was again 1 lap back on 95 laps for the night.
1 more lap back with 94 was the first of the BMW of Callan Thomas on 94 laps, 2 laps clear of 5th placegetter Phil Kalbfell on 92. Back in 6th this week & on 90 laps was the new BMW of yours truly, and the early test round promise of this vehicle came to absolutely nothing in the 1st round of actual racing. The small matter of it having been driven by Phil in the shakedown round might have had something to do with this, but seriously, 6 laps difference & none of the earlier speed on show has the writer wondering what the heck happened in few weeks. Some testing to take place next week I feel. Mind you, I was not the only one to feel the impact of the sluggishness of their steed this week.
1 more lap back on 89 laps total, was Rhys Filbee in 7th , and in 8th, Dave Gray on 83.
Thomas Males notched up 74 laps this week & ended up in 9th. As alluded to earlier, Adrian Gray was so appalled by the pace shown by, not 1, but 2 of the cars he tested, that they were both relegated back to the box within a lap of taking to the track. He will be another looking forward to the next series already !
A break now from BTCC while we continue with Cartrix next week, which will hopefully give some of us time to undergo a thorough investigation of our cars lack of performance.

Race report - Round 2
It was a very interesting & close round 2 of the BTCC series this week at Stratton Valley. Looking over the results it showed that there were 4 separate groups of 2 or more drivers that shared lap totals this round, and in fact only 1 driver in the whole field who was all alone on his own lap count.
It started at the pointy end with the Dave Schofield combination of driver & car of once again proving to be the quality of the field. However, once Schoee had driven early on to a very good total of 73 laps, he would have to wait until the very last heat to see if it would survive. It did…..just. The very rapid pace set by JB had Schoee on edge & as John whizzed past the lap counter to equal Schoees total in the last seconds of the final heat, it was only a matter of seeing where on the lap JB stopped. I was quite far enough and Schooe took 1st from JB in a great battle. One that has the promise of continuing throughout the series at this stage.
Back in 3rd, and the only driver who didn’t get the memo about sharing lap totals this week, Adrian Gray was all on his own on 70 laps, making his place the easiest for the officials to work out at the end of the round.
4th & 5th was another two sided battle between DB 7 Bruce this time. Both finished on 68 laps, but it was DB who took the bragging rights over Bruce on track position for 4th with Bruce having to settle for 5th.
67 laps was a very popular total as it was shared among 3 drivers starting at 6th through to 8th. It was the writer who managed to take the first of these positions, a corner or two ahead of Phil in 7th & the unlucky Rhys racking up the same number of laps, but being pushed down to 8th by the end of the round.
The last pairing of Tom & Dave Gray also got in on the act sharing 59 laps for the night, and this time it was Tom in his brand new Honda who took the track position & 9th place ahead of Dave in 10th
Toms new model looks to have some potential, and seems quite smooth around the track on its debut. It could be the next big breakthrough model for this class.

ace report - Round 3
3 rounds into the BTCC series and we’re starting to learn some things based on the racing so far.
Mainly this: These are one of the slowest classes of car that we run in the entire 2 year rotation of series at this club. Anyone got one slower?
Anyway, the most important thing is not the speed, it’s the racing right ?
And it was another close night of racing this week as the 2 form drivers of the series so far (Schoee & Bruce) went head to head.
This week it was Bruce’s turn to take his first win of the series with his total of 98 laps proving 2 laps too much for Schoee to chase down with his total of 96. In 3rd this week & with a vast improvement on the first 2 rounds, Rhys Filbee. Rhys was just 1 lap off the pacesetting Schoee with 95 laps to his name, and after a 7th & 8th in the first 2 rounds is well in the running for the most improved award.
Also on 95 laps, but shuffled down to 4th on track position was Callan, 1 lap to the good of JB in 5th on a total of 94 laps.
It was a 2 way battle for 6th & 7th between Phil & Adrian both of whom found their cars less than satisfactory this week. Their total of 93 laps each was only separated by track position & it was Phil who took this one out this week for 6th relegating Adrian to 7th.
In 8th, DB managed 91 laps for the night, which was well & truly enough to take care of the writer who could only manage 88 laps for 9th.
Just 2 laps back in 10th was Dave Gray on 86 laps & Tomas Males in 11th with his 81 lap total.

- Tasman Cup cars from 1961 -64 perhaps? Nope, on average Tasman cup cars are 1/10th quicker….next ?
- Front engine sports cars from the 1950s & 60s maybe ? Hmm, closer, but they still just pip the BTCC cars.
- No wait….I’ve found one. Cartrix Grand Prix cars from the 1950s are actually slightly slower than BTCC cars from the late 2010s…..although it would be a close run thing.
Anyway, the most important thing is not the speed, it’s the racing right ?

Round 5 - Race report
It was a huge field of 13 drivers that gathered at JBs Stratton Valley Raceway this week for the running of round 5 of the BTCC class. It seems no time at all since this series started, and we’re already at the business end. Which doesn’t bring much joy to those of us who have ordinary handling & performing vehicles. Time has basically run out for any improvement of any note to take effect.
Those drivers who DO have a well performed & handling vehicle however, are starting to get quite toey & nervous about maintaining a good score each week, and would be very unhappy if anything untoward were to occur that might possibly kybosh any of their good results.
Which is exactly what almost happened this week.
After a very standard start to the racing, the round was progressing nicely with few major incidents & even newcomer Caine Kalbfell circulating quite nicely as he started to get a handle on the car & track.
All was well…..until series leader Schoee took to the track. Hoping to re-establish a good points buffer at the top of the table Schoee started off very well & with a good heat 1 total locked in, and another on the way in heat 2………everything crashed. Computer completely shut down, & even though the cars continued driving around it was fairly obvious that disaster had struck the round.
This led to much faffing about by the so called IT gurus, the end result of which was that they decided that the BTCC round progress was unrecoverable & we would have the cancel the round & move onto the Aust GT series. So, after practice for the Aust GT was completed & Race Co-ordinator was being prepared for the next series suddenly a message popped up on the screen asking us if we wanted to continue the recovered race…..which we did - lo & behold, the BTCC round results were all loaded up with just 1 heat (the last on run) missing.
After a quick re-set from the drivers involved, we were able to continue & finish the round as normal, which was a huge relief for Schoee as he took out the round with his total of 74 laps. This was just 1 lap ahead of local favourite JB in 2nd on 73 laps with Phil rounding out the VW domination of the top 3 with his 72 lap total on the night.
Missing 3rd on track position, Bruce also notched up 72 laps, which meant a 4th place for him, 1 lap ahead of Rhys Filbee in 5th with Rhys notching up 71 laps.
A logjam eventuated for 6th to 8th with 3 drivers finishing on 69 laps, but it was the writer who grabbed 6th, from Adrian in 7th & DB in 8th.
Another close battle for 9th & 10th on 68 laps apiece, was between Rob Golley (on his return to the fray) & Callan Thomas. Rob managed to grab the place (9th) this week from Callan in 10th.
Dave Gray grabbed 11th on 64 laps with consistent driving ahead of Tom in 12th on 59 laps.
Caine drove a very sensible 3 brackets as he found his way around the track & got used to the car, and he ended up on 55 laps and a 13th place for the end of the round.

Round 6 - Race report
1 round to go……and Schoees heartrate is no doubt increasing day by day with the very real opportunity of a series win in the offing.
Although, with 3 wins a 2nd & a 3rd in 5 out of the first 6 rounds so far there’s not really much for him to worry about. In addition to which Schoees worst performance of the series was during this round…which was promptly erased from the results as the dropped round.
So, it’s all looking good leading into the final round next week.
In this round however, it was Phil & Bruce who fought it out for the win with a equal lap total of 99. Track position decided the result, and it was Phil who took out his 2nd win for the series form Bruce in 2nd. Just 1 lap back (98) in 3rd was JB, which once again highlighted his exceptional consistency in the series, as this was his 5th top 3 finish of the series. JB has been the main contender to Schoee throughout and remains 1 point clear in 2nd overall with 1 round to go.
1 more lap back on 97 laps and in 4th, Callan once again made the most of the erratic & troublesome BMW to finish 1 spot ahead of series leader Schoee this week. Schoees 96 laps pushed him down to 5th, but was still part of that upper bracket of drivers in the 99-96 lap range.
There was a gap of 4 laps back to 6th placed Rob Golley whose own total of 92, was 1 ahead of DB in 7th & 2 ahead of Rhys in 8th on 90 laps.
A further 2 laps back in 9th was the writer in the sluggish MG with 88 laps, 4 laps clear of Dave Gray in 10th on 84, with Thomas Males in 11th on 82 & Caine Kalbfell in 12th on 81 laps for the evening.
Adrian Gray rounded out the field of 13 with his aborted batch of heats ending with a total of 74 laps. The sheer lack of wheelbase has been the sticking point for most of the series, and we may have seen the last of the old style Honda Civic gracing the tracks during this class.

Round 7 Report & Series summary
This was it ! the final round of the BTCC series for 2024, and with 1 round to go it was all Schoees series to lose. With a 4 point lead over nearest rival John Batich it would take a failure of epic proportions (or a simple slipping pinion or something equally as frustrating) to prevent him from a very well deserved & overdue overall win.
However, it still required the round to be run & won, and so it was with great anticipation that we gathered at Mornington Park on a wet & wild night to witness the last rites of the 2024 BTCC series.
2nd place in the series, JB certainly did all he could to at least put some pressure on Schoee with a lap total of 110, which was equal with Phil Kalbfell. However it was JB who took 1st this week on track position from Phil in 2nd. It was JBs first win for the series, but it has been his absolute consistency of top 3 finishes that has led to his high place series result. In Phils case it has been the story of 2 halves. From round 4 onward he has been the form driver of the entire series with 2 wins, a 2nd & a 3rd. However, rounds 1-3 really put paid to him being able to press for the overall win.
3rd place this week, and therefore making sure of his comeback series win, was Dave Schofield on 108 laps for the night. Schoee hasn’t quite captured his early series brilliance over the final 2 rounds, but his drives have certainly been good enough to guarantee a 2 point winning margin from JB. Well done indeed.
In 4th place this week on 106 laps was another driver whose sheer consistency has maintained & ensured his position in the top 3 overall from week to week. Bruce’s 1x win, 2x 2nd placing & a bunch of 4th place finishes meant that he earned the last spot on the series podium, just 1 point ahead of Phil overall.
To the rest – in 5th this week on 105 laps, and 5th spot overall, Rhys Filbee in the sometimes quick & sometimes erratic BMW, a description that could also apply to 6th place getter Callan (‘ello, ‘ello, ‘ello) Thomas. Callans 104 laps also gave him a 6th placing in the series. His one missed round & 1 disastrous round (10th) not helping his cause at all.
Also on 104 laps, but achieved in an entirely different race setup, Rob Golley was initially left off the racing schedule due to inattention, and had to complete his heats at the end of the rotations on his Pat Malone. He still managed a good set of heats though, enough for 7th.
In 8th on 103 laps & very much looking forward to running these again in 2 years time, Adrian Gray. In 9th on 102 laps, myself…with very similar sentiments.
The top 10 rounded was out by Dave Gray with his 93 laps, the same number as 11th place finisher Thomas Males. In 12 this week & battling a less than ideal handing rent -a-car Caine Kalbfell on 86 laps.
