Race report - Round 1
After a wonderful array of spectacular machinery was formed up on the grid for the grid shot, the much awaited Can-Am series was ready to begin…
Which, it did …….eventually, after an aborted start due to technical issues we finally got underway.
Right from the get-go we saw some extremely quick lap times being laid down with Schoee’s NSR Porsche 917 (5.76) & Rob Golleys Thunderslot Lola (5.86) going head to head in the first heat.
Things didn’t get any more relaxed as the drivers came & went. Callan put down the next lap target with a 5.57 in heat 1, only to better that with a rapid 5.46 in his very next heat. The writer gave it his shot, but failed with a 5.61, and it all seemed as though Callan would stay top of the lap time chart…until the final driver rotation brought Ben onto the track for his first heat…..during which he promptly screamed around in a 5.41 !. Sadly, his 1 lap pace didn’t quite pay dividends in the overall results as we shall read about later.
So, once the sheer speed of these cars was established it remained to see which of the drivers could put the fast laps together in each heat & add up to some good lap totals.
As mentioned earlier, Schooe’s lap pace, was matched by a very solid 3 heats & he put down the first lap total marker of 87 laps. Who could beat this ?
Phil came & went and could only manage 85, but Callan it was who put it all together with his 91 laps, & was then left sitting to see if anyone else could come close. Despite the best efforts of myself (89), the erratic but rapid Ben Lewis (85), and the return of Rob Golley right at the end (85) no-one could knock Callan off.
SO, Callan with the win, myself in 2nd & Schoee in 3rd for the first Can-Am podium.
Rob’s total of 85, tied with Phil & Ben, but it was Rob grabbing 4th on track, with Phil in 5th, and the unlucky Ben dropping to 6th overall.
JB, was next in line in 7th and his 83 lap total was also very solid, with Scott just 2 laps back in 8th on 81. Dave Bantoft drove around quite sedately for his 79 laps & 9th place overall, and Dave Gray was competitive to round out the top 10 on 73 laps for the night.
Bruce Thomas showed signs of pace in 1 heat, but unfortunate results in heat 1 & 3 didn’t heap his overall cause & his 71 lap total placed him 11th this week.
