Round 1 - Race Report

Ahhh, Trucks…..

even the sound of the word elicits a classic case of onomatopoeia at work. The pronunciation is so similar to another certain word, that there can be no doubt about it not being a co-incidence.

In fact, you’ll likely hear many, many uses of the word over the course of any heat of one round of the series.

Expressions such as :

“ TRUCK, red, red, red”
Or
“TRUCK, wrong lane !”

…….just a couple of the multitude of the TRUCK word likely to be heard.

Anyway, for some reason the series has been awaited with enthusiasm by many drivers. In fact DB was beside himself with excitement, so much so that he couldn’t even bring himself to attend the first round! Dave Gray & the writer demonstrated our excitement by not having Trucks to run at all.

There were, however, still enough Trucks on track to cause the untold carnage that goes hand in hand with this class & leave the marshalls wishing they had 3 or 4 arms each.

Ben spared no expense on his Truck build, and this told to good effect with his 92 laps being enough to take out round 1 by 2 laps clear of a 3 way battle for the next few places. Phil JB & Scott all notched up 90 laps, and it was track position that saw Phil take 2nd from JB in 3rd, with Scott the unlucky 4th placegetter of the trio.

On 88 laps and all alone in 5th was Mr Truck himself, Bruce Thomas, 1 lap clear of the junior Thomas (Callan) in 6th on 87 laps.

Schoee took 7th on 83 laps, 2 clear of another battle for 8th 7 9th between Rhys & Adrian with their shared 81 lap total.

Rhys grabbed the position on track though (8th) with Adrian in 9th…….and on the scout for a new Truck apparently.

Blair had been looking forward to running the Trucks for sometime, however the reality of these monstrosities became clear to him in round 1 & his total of 72 laps will be something to work on in rounds to come. 10th for Blair in the end, ahead of Tom in 11th on 50 laps after having a slight issue of dropping 1 of his braids on the track. Which caused no end of problems to his Truck running for the night.

1 round down…..6 to go…..it you say it quickly it doesn’t sound so bad….

Round 3 - Report

Well, certainly Robin could have been forgiven for the mistake, as the carnage on Track  simulated the worst of any Dynamic Duo punch ups in cartoon history. However in this case The Joker (hehe) was on those foolish enough to attempt to drive these unwieldy monsters. Some of those who knew better, declined to drive….or even attend.

In any event, some hardy souls ventured out on to the wilds of Mornington Park track & some even managed to complete all 3 heats.
Most of those finished in the top 3……

First this week, with a very steady & controlled drive once again was the Truck Master, Robin in a super-heroic display reminiscent with his crime-fighting namesake.

Rob notched up an even 100 laps to take the win from the well performed Schoee in 2nd with a good 97 lap total. 3rd spot on the podium, despite some major impacts, was Adrian Gray on 94 laps, and also with a possible a slight re-evaluation of his (lowly) opinion of this class.

Phil was next in line 2 laps back on 92, with Rhys in 5th (89) followed by Ben (88), with his  blinding pace, not quite making up for some major incidents during his drive.

Blair locked in 7th on 82, with the Batman himself striking all sorts of trouble & having to settle for 8th in the end with his 79 laps garnered from about 2 ½ heats.

Rounding out the top was Tom in 9th on 77, and Dave Gray (who may never drive Trucks again) in 10th on 61 laps for the night…..

Is it only Round 3 ?????  Noooooooooo.

Round 7 - Report

Celebrations ranged far & wide with the knowledge that we had arrived at the final round of the Fly Truck series for another 2 years. From the professional Marshalls, who only turned up each week to put a bunch these destructive vehicles back on track (Blair & myself), to Dave Bantoft who took the opportunity to stay at home for most of the series, there were plenty of members who looked forward to getting back to the normality of running 2 conventional series each Tuesday night.

Amazingly, however, there were some others who actually relished running these leviathans. As far as the writer is concerned, this nauseatingly positive attitude towards Trucks is quite incomprehensible, and I would recommend anyone in this boat to sit down & take a look at the classic 1971 Spielberg road rage movie “Duel”. This would surely discourage any cheerful thoughts toward prime movers in the future.

Actually, maybe I’m thinking about this all wrong though? Perhaps, thinking along the lines of the plot of “Duel”,  we could kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Maybe a COMBINED series would be the way to go.

So, for example, lets take another series with cars that we all hate…. SCX NASCARS would be the way to go, combine this series with Trucks, and have a series with both vehicles on track at the same time.

We could then hold a draw to see which vehicle (Truck or Car) each driver has to drive each week…..and watch the carnage !

Anyway, just a thought, brilliant ideas such as this come to me on a regular basis.

So, as I might have mentioned before, it was the final round of the series this week, and with a 4 point lead going into the final round, it would take a serious drop off in the results for Phil to be in danger of being overtaken, which didn’t happen………just. Scotts final round win with 104 laps, and a 4th place performance from Phil (102) was just enough for him to scrape out a series win by the bare margin of 1 point ! Scott was the unlucky fast finisher in the series, and locked in 2nd overall quite comfortably. It was also a very tight battle for 3rd in the series, with Rob Golly pulling out a 2nd place finish this week(also on 104 laps)  to overcome Mr. Truck Bruce Thomas by 1 point for overall 3rd. Very exciting.

Playing joker this week & slotting into 3rd place this week was JB on 103 laps, however 2 missed rounds for John really meant his Trucks potential was not fully realised.

Bruce’s 5th   (101 laps) this week (as mentioned) saw him drop down to 4th in the series, which was 1 spot ahead of Schoee (95) in both the weeks racing & the series overall.

Ben & Callan shared  94 laps this week, but it was Ben who grabbed 7th on track from Callan in 8th. Adrian took 9th from Rhys in 10th thanks to another track position battle over 92 laps.

In 11th & on 84 laps, Dave Gray, with Tom logging 82 laps for 12th in the final position of the series.
