Race Report - Round 1
First round of the much loved and highly anticipated Grand-Am series was next on the nights racing schedule, and it was obvious how much love there was for this series from all the suggestions as to what bodies we could better put on the chassis to make this a likable class.
A variety of ideas ranging from Speedway bodies, to current NASCAR & everything in between was proposed, however this year we would sadly still be looking at an entire field made up of these things….
Honestly, if these bodies were all white kit cars, this is what the full field photo might look like….

However, the chassis itself can make for some close racing, and being a Rhys series there were very few rules to be complied with, which was compounded by the fact that as it was a Rhys series it was also therefore completely absent from any form of scrutineering. So, basically a free for all then.
However, allowing for the fact that Ben was a runaway winner again by the small (monstrous) margin of some 9 laps (118), there was indeed some close racing. 2nd & 3rd for the 2nd time this evening was decided between myself & DB. This time round it was a 1 lap difference between myself in 2nd on 109laps & DB managing 108 laps for the night. The total of 108 laps was also shared with Callan Thomas in 4th, with only track position deciding the sport in DBs favour.
Schoee put together a good start to the series with his 105 laps being good enough for 5th, ahead of 2 drivers locked together on 103. Rhys managed to grab the higher spot (6th) from Rob (7th) on Track position, This was possibly a good result for Rob, given that just before racing Rob was seen operating a Dremel in a last minute attempt to get his cars rear tyres to clear bodywork.
8th place this week was JB on a round 100 laps, 1 lap clear of Phil (9th) on 99 laps & Blair in a solid 10th on 96 laps.
Dave Gray in 11th (93) & Thomas Males 12th (92) were also not far off the pace at all. However it was not a perfect start to the series for Adrian, whose car was struggling to get around corners at all which contributed to his 84 lap total and 13th place for the round.

Race Report - Round 7
Final round of the Grand-Am series, and it all came down to the wire in the overall series. As things stood going into the round, It was Callan with a 2 point lead in the series with myself in 2nd So it was obvious that everything hinged on those all important placings in the final round……..well, obvious to everyone but Callan, who decided that the result was so much of a foregone conclusion that he didn’t bother to show up to race in the final round.
Mind you, this might not have been as foolish a tactic as it looked initially. As Blair pointed out (after doing some quick primary school mathematics) for any result other than a Callan series win, it would require nothing less than a win in the final round from the writer. Which sounds plausible at first glance…..however, the venue (Mornington Park) was a notorious favourite of that cut cat paced car of Ben Lewis & anyone daring to think of taking a win from Ben in this round, would no doubt have to engage in some of Callans favourite tactic.....….talking.
It all turned out rather predictably of course, there was no track talk to distract Ben, who raced around at obscene speeds & racked up ridiculous numbers of laps (134 !) to take the win by a full 9 laps. The writer wasn’t even able to salvage a 2nd place finish either, as a top performance by Phil in all brackets saw him notch 127 laps to take 2nd by 2 laps. In 3rd, on 125 laps was a dejected writer.
In the other battles, Rob took out a good 4th on 120 laps for the night, just 1 lap clear of Bruce Thomas on 119. Adrian ended up 6th with 114, ahead of a tight battle for 7th & 8th between Schooe & Rhys. Schooe came within a mm of racking up another lap however, so it was he who took the place ahead of Rhys in 8th.
Blair continued to show good consistency with his 111 laps for 9th, ahead of Dave Gray in 10th (101) & Thomas in 11th on 89 laps.
So, overall it was a well deserved series win for Callan by 1 point from yours truly, with Ben probably the unluckiest 3rd place finisher of all time……
Ben was last seen heading to Gotham Park with a can of fuel & a cigarette lighter for some reason ?
