Round 1 -  Sorell Creek - 4/11/25

Race report - Round 1

After the lunacy of the LMP series, it was a nice feeling to get back to some degree of normality with regular rubber tyre grip and classic Group C cars that also look fantastic.

Despite the fact that we were missing a couple  of drivers, a huge field of 21 cars was assembled on the starting grid for the pre-race photo, which was amazing given the fact that there were only 14 drivers !

Anyway, it not only made for a good shot (as seen above), but also highlighted the new cars that were going around this year, some of which had barely made it into the slot car shops lineup before being snapped up & put on track into pitched battle.

Early practice results were interesting. DB came, plonked his car on track, promptly blasted his entry around in 5.4s, stated that it was “good enough” & disappeared into the driver lounge.

Others came & could get no-where near this time, in fact anything close to a 6.0 was looking like a decent enough effort, but it was looking very much like a 1 horse race for DB to lose…….until he was seen hurriedly prising the magnet out of his chassis immediately prior to racing!
So, a far more even field was now in the pipeline.

As it turned out, a lap time of anything under 6.0s was in the elite level in this round, and the only driver churning out these sort of times regularly enough was Phil. His 92 laps was enough to take out the win in round 1 by a clear 2  laps so a far better result for him than the earlier class.
In 2nd & 3rd there were 2 drivers who ended up on the same lap (90), but in the end, 2nd placegetter (myself) had a rather hollow feeling about this place, as the other driver, Callan, suffered from some horrid marshaling & a guide mishap in the final stages of his last heat, costing him at least 1 lap. No mention needs to be made of the marshal in question.

2 laps back on 88, and another car with enough pace to dip under the 6 second mark, was Rob Golley, who in turn was 2 laps clear of 2 drivers sharing 86 laps in a battle for 5th & 6th. Track position meant that it was Scott who took the place in this fight, from Ben in 6th.

A great drive from Luke in his debut for this class of car saw him take 7th spot in the lineup with his solid 84 laps total, with Schoee 1 lap back on 83 to finish 8th.

Rhys was next in line in 9th on 82, and Dave Gray took the final top 10 place with his 80 laps for the night.

Interestingly, DBs car was slightly more recalcitrant once the magnet had been removed, and his 77 laps was only good enough for 11th this week, however with another mag-braid track on the agenda for next week, scrutineers will need to have their wits about them in case of a regression.
Tom was next in line in 12th with 70 laps for the night, followed by 2 drivers suffering serious mechanicals leading to a write off on their heat results.

Officially it was Blair in 13th & Adrian Gray in 14th.

Adrian will be looking to participate more over the course of the night next week….as it was this week, he earned his money marshaling…….no, wait…actually he paid for the privilege of marshalling.

To the Batcave…….

Round 2 -  Gotham Park - 11/11/25
1st - Phil Kalbfell
2nd - Bruce Thomas
3rd - Callan Thomas

Race report - Round 2

Moving on to round 2 of the Group C Sports series this week, and it was a very full field that took to the Gotham Park circuit. Well rubbered in after the earlier Porsche Cup there were no excuses for lack of grip, however it still paid off NOT to exit the painted track surface if you could possibly avoid it. Those who didn’t, benefited greatly in the final washup of positions.

The first thing to notice once these cars got on track, was the complete & utter lack of noise compared to the previous Revoslot Porsches. In fact, these slot-it in lines, might well be the quietest, smoothest commercial class that we run in the 2 year series rotation.

The marshal & driver noise, however, was its usual disorderly, riotous, uncontrolled racket. This wasn’t helped by the fact there seemed to be an extra level of banter between driver & marshal this week……particularly those involved in marshalling in the “pit”. For those not familiar with this term, it’s because I’ve just invented it. However, I deem it entirely appropriate to describe that particular location on Gotham Park otherwise known as no-mans land, which is cut off from the support of any other marshals by the driver station, which is usually inhabited by less than generous or patient drivers dwelling on every mistake that might be made.

To be fair…there were some instances of slightly bewildering marshalling in “The Pit” this week, so much so that it prompted Bruce to call for a re-introduction of the previously popular Don Smallgoods “Ham fisted” Marshalling award and to bring back the allocation of points to this competition.

As a reminder to newcomers, this was the scoring system:

Anyway, I digress……quite significantly.

In the actual racing, it was another great win for Phil in the 1/28 scale class (of which there are just 2 entries…..both Jags BTW), and his total of 95 laps was just 1 lap clear of the winner in the 1/32 scale class, Bruce Thomas who competed very pluckily despite being outgunned by such a size difference. 2 laps back in 3rd was Callan Thomas on 92 laps & showing his 2nd strong result in 2 weeks. In 4th this week & 1 lap back (91) was the writer.

A good break of 6 laps back to the next group and heading these was Rob Golley in 5th on 85, followed by a ding dong battle for 6th & 7th between Luke Mac & Schoee, both finishing on a solid 84 laps. However, in his best result for his time at the club, it was Luke who managed to grab the track position & 6th place from Schoee in 7th.

Ben was 8th, 1 lap adrift  on 83, ahead of 9th place Rhys on 82, and a frustrated Adrian Gray rounding out the top 10 on 81 laps…many of them very quick, however as mentioned earlier, he suffered somewhat from picking up debris from the traditional Gotham Park edge of circuit run-off.

On 80 laps each, it was a battle of the Daves for 11th & 12th between Bantoft & Gray, with DB winning out in this case. Next in line for 13th overall was Scott on 76, however it was a 2nd place in the 1/28 class.

Tom grabbed 14th with a variety of cars for 67 laps, with the despondent Blair pulling the pin on his night early. Looking forward to much better fortune in coming weeks Blair.
