 Race Report - Round 1

New series time again…and this weeks it was the GT World Challenge Australian edition that debuted for the year. We saw a quite a few new cars in the field since the last series in 2024, but all of them seemed to have the same livery for some reason? Repsol will certainly get it’s advertising budgets worth this series.

Well, when I say “all”, what I mean is all apart from Phils which was so obviously different that it almost hurt the eyes to look at it.
I’ll be allocating these safety glasses next week for all other drivers & marshalls to cope with the glare.
Picture
To be fair, Callan also unveiled a new car that wasn’t a Repsol livery, but it was however an NSR, which, after the success of such a car last series, over half the field are now running.

SO, in the end, the round was a huge battle between the NSR AMG of Callan & the flouro orange Scaleauto Lambo of Phil, with neither giving any ground, and with both eventually finishing on 117 laps for the night. Track position only (helped by a fastest lap of 5.56) gave the win to Callan this time though, with Phil in a very close 2nd (lap time 5.64)

Bruce’s welcome return to racing & hosting was celebrated with his new car (NSR Corvette in the Repsol livery) grabbing the 3rd spot on the podium on 114 laps, 4 laps clear of next in line JB in 4th on 110. JBs habit regularly choosing a car from left field was one again on show, as he ran with the wonderful looking Nissan GTR by Slot-it & showed that he was certainly well on the pace of the plethora of NSRs on display.

Luke unveiled his new car in fine fashion with a trouble-free run over his 4 heats which helped him rack up 108 laps & grab a very good 5th place. The writer’s Repsol liveried NSR AMG was next, and despite showing good pace with a 5.61 lap in the mix, this car suffered the dire consequences of running wide at a corner on Bruces Track……..and necessitated some deep cleaning of the tyres to remove the never ending layers of residue that lie in wait for the unwary just off the edge of the racing line. 6th place & 105 laps for me.

Rhys also managed 105 laps, but was pushed down to 7th on track position, 2 laps ahead of 8th place getter Blair in his newly unveiled car, the Repsol liveried NSR Corvette.

Another newly presented car was next in line on 101 laps, and it was the unique Repsol livery of Dave Schofields NSR Corvette which ended up eventually finishing in 9th position.

Dave Gray showed very solid form this round & his 98 lap total was enough to promote him into 10th place, and 2 laps clear of the disappointed Dave Bantoft whose car tootled around in the 6.5 second lap bracket for 96 laps

Round 2 - Sorell Creek - 23/6/26

1st - Phil Kalbfell
2nd - Callan Thomas
3rd - Mal O'May
Race Report - Round 2

Another week of the Australian version of the GT World Challenge (round 2), and a first visit of the series to the Sorell Creek track, with the subtle differences in grip, and undulations that make adapting to this track a challenge for many drivers.

The first driver to suffer the consequences of these variations was last weeks winner Callan. After a great battle with Phil last week (shared laps), we were all looking forward to similar epic battle this week. However, it was Phil who adapted best…. aided somewhat by a couple of perfectly timed little nudges on Callan, and his total of 100 laps placed him first by a clear 4 laps.

Callans battle to stay in the slot when rubbing shoulders with Phil, along with his very different tyre grip levels all combined to conspire against him, and his 96 lap total placed  him on the same total as the writer in the battle for 2nd & 3rd in the round. Of course, his 2nd place was never really in danger, and by the length of the middle straight it was Callan in 2nd & yours truly in 3rd.

The above mentioned 2 way battle for 2nd & 3rd was just the first of a trio of such same lap battles in the round. The next off the bat, was the fight between Bruce & Rob for 4th & 5th with their total of 93 laps apiece. It was Bruce who took this out however in his nicely developed Corvette, with Rob a corner or so back and having to settle for 5th.

91 laps was the next popular total with Blair & Rhys locked together, however it was Rhys on the good side of track position this time who took 6th ahead of Blair in 7th.

Once again JB managed to avoid any issues involving track position as he alone notched up 90 laps to lock in 8th, 1 lap ahead of a very frustrated Adrian Gray on 89 laps in 9th. Adrian once again had good pace, but the evils of the back straight hump caught his car out as it wriggled enough under acceleration to snap it out of the slot, thus giving the marshal on the next corner some significant work to do.

DB rounded out the top 10 with his 87 lap total, 4 laps clear of Dave Gray in 11th on 82.

Schoee had a frustrating run as well this week to put together his 79 laps for 12th, with Chris (Stack) Priest returning to the fray in this series after a long sabbatical. A circumspect return from Stack who ended up 13th on his total of 75 laps.

Totally different track conditions next week as we head to Mornington Park for round 3.

Race Report - Round 4

Okey-doke, so being a little bored (& slightly interested in seeing the result after witnessing Phils admittedly pretty cool results of using AI in generating 3d print files), I decided to run this weeks GT World Challenge results through AI to see what sort of race report it might come up with........this is what we got.....

Kalbfell Takes Commanding Victory in Round 4

Round 4 of the GT World Challenge Australia Series produced another thrilling chapter in the championship, with a competitive field battling hard throughout the event. At the conclusion of an action-packed race, Phil Kalbfell emerged victorious, leading home Callan Thomas and Mal O'May to complete the podium.
From the outset, Kalbfell showed impressive pace and composure, quickly establishing himself as the driver to beat. Delivering a faultless performance, Kalbfell maintained his advantage under pressure and controlled proceedings from the front to secure a well-deserved victory and maximum championship points.
Callan Thomas mounted a strong challenge throughout the race and was consistently among the fastest competitors on track. Despite closing on the leader at various stages, Thomas was unable to find a way past and crossed the line in second place, adding another strong result to his Round 5 campaign.
The battle for the final podium position proved equally competitive, with Mal O'May producing one of his strongest drives of the season. Combining consistency with excellent race management, O'May kept himself firmly in contention throughout the race and was rewarded with a hard-earned third-place finish.
Just missing the podium was Bruce Thomas, who delivered a determined performance to claim fourth position. Remaining within striking distance of the leading trio for much of the race, Thomas continued to apply pressure and demonstrated strong pace from start to finish.
Rounding out the top five was Rob Golley, whose reliable and consistent performance ensured another solid points finish. Golley remained competitive throughout the event and comfortably secured a place among the front runners.
John Batich finished sixth following a steady and disciplined drive, while Rhys Filbee crossed the line in seventh after battling hard through the midfield. Both drivers showed excellent consistency in a race where track position proved crucial.
Adrian Gray secured eighth place, continuing a solid run of form, with Blair Mc taking ninth after an impressive effort to remain inside the top ten. Dave Bantoft completed the top ten after a determined drive that saw him overcome strong competition throughout the field.
Further down the order, Dave Schofield finished eleventh ahead of Dave Gray in twelfth. Chris Priest rounded out the field in thirteenth, showing perseverance and determination to complete the race despite the challenges of Round 4 competition.
With the championship entering its critical stages, Kalbfell's victory further strengthens his position among the series' leading contenders. However, strong performances from Thomas, O'May and the rest of the field ensure that the battle for honours in the GT World Challenge Australia Series remains as competitive as ever heading into the next round.

Podium
🥇 Phil Kalbfell
🥈 Callan Thomas
🥉 Mal O'May

Kalbfell's victory in Round 4 sets up an intriguing championship battle as the GT World Challenge Australia Series moves towards its next event, with the competition at the front of the field showing no signs of easing.

Right.....so, apart from being utterly bland, insipid, featureless, banal & in all ways utterly dull & dreary.......it also has some obvious misleading sweeping statements.....

Let's start with "Callan Thomas ...closing in on the leader at various stages"......I must have missed this when watching, as I was sure Phil's 2 lap margin was pretty clear.
Next was my own  - "one of his strongest drives of the season"......well...given that it was exactly the same result as my previous 2 drives, not sure how it decided to label this one as a "strongest drive"
"Just missing the podium was Bruce Thomas" who "was within striking distance of the leading trio"........well, possibly........if you count 4 to 9 laps as "within striking distance"
I'm not sure Adrian would even remotely agree that he was "continuing a solid run of form", never mind DB having a "determined drive" for 10th  Goodness me!
To be fair....it did actually pick up that "track position proved crucial" between JB & Rhys, however, I'm putting this down to sheer luck.
Finally, as for "Kalbfells victory .....setting up an intriguing championship battle".........about the only intriguing thing is how far Phil is going to win the series by !

Back to your (unreliable) human correspondent from now on.........unless I really run short on time

Race Report - Round 6

Round 6 of the GT World Challenge Australia Series proved that in slot car racing, speed helps, consistency wins races, and luck occasionally decides who gets marshalled first.
A competitive field of 12 drivers took to the circuit, producing close battles throughout the order, with the fight for victory going right down to the wire.

Callan Wins the Battle, Phil Wins the Stopwatch

The headline act was the duel between Callan Thomas and Phil Kalbfell, who both completed 91 laps. After all the counting, measuring and scrutinising of timing sheets was completed, it was Callan who claimed the Round 6 victory.
Callan's best lap of 5.520 seconds demonstrated excellent pace, but he faced relentless pressure from Phil throughout the evening.
Despite finishing second, Phil recorded the Fastest Lap of the Meeting, a blistering 5.436 seconds. Unfortunately, as many racers have discovered over the years, the trophy cabinet rewards total laps rather than isolated moments of brilliance.
Phil can at least console himself with the knowledge that he now has a perfectly valid excuse to remind everyone he was technically the fastest driver on the night.

O'May Takes Another Podium
Mal O'May claimed third place with 87 laps, finishing comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.
Mal's fastest lap of 5.767 seconds matched that of Rob Golley and demonstrated the consistency that kept him firmly on the podium. While the leaders fought over the win, Mal quietly got on with the business of collecting championship points.

Golley Heads Packed Midfield
Just one lap behind the podium was Rob Golley, finishing fourth on 86 laps with a best lap of 5.767 seconds.
Behind Rob, things became extremely crowded.
Adrian Gray, Blair Mc, Dave Schofield and Bruce Thomas all completed 85 laps, creating one of the tightest midfield battles seen all season.
Adrian headed the group in fifth and showed impressive speed with a 5.446-second lap, second only to Phil for outright pace. Blair Mc finished sixth with a 5.640-second lap, while Dave Schofield's 5.698 seconds secured seventh.
Bruce Thomas rounded out the group in eighth. His fastest lap of 5.896 seconds may not have reflected his usual outright speed, but proving once again that staying on the slot counts for plenty.

Tight Racing Throughout the Field
John Batich secured ninth place on 83 laps, recording a best lap of 5.964 seconds.
Luke Mc finished tenth with 80 laps and a fastest lap of 6.242 seconds.
Further back, Dave Bantoft managed 77 laps with a 6.111-second best effort, while Rhys Filbee completed 76 laps and recorded a fastest lap of 6.347 seconds.
The gap between eleventh and twelfth was only a single lap, proving that every section and every marshal call mattered.

Fastest Lap Award
🏆 Phil Kalbfell claimed the Fastest Lap Award with an outstanding 5.436-second lap.
The award carries no championship points, no bonus laps, and absolutely no advantage whatsoever beyond giving Phil something to casually mention whenever Round 6 comes up in conversation.

Looking Ahead
With Callan edging out Phil despite identical lap totals, and four drivers tied on 85 laps, Round 6 demonstrated that the GT World Challenge field is becoming increasingly competitive.
As the championship moves forward, drivers will continue searching for speed, consistency and perhaps a little bit of mercy from the track marshals. One thing is certain: if the racing gets any closer, the race director may need to start measuring gaps with a microscope.
Bring on Round 7. 🏁🏎️💨

Round 7 - Mornington Park - 4/8/26

1st - Phil Kalbfell
2nd - Mal O'May
3rd - Callan Thomas

Race Report - Round 7, and series Summary

Well, leading into the final round of the GT World Challenge, Australia series, there looked to be some slight intrigue in the possible series outcome given some semblance of closeness in the points after round 6.

However, upon closer examination it was pointed out that the series win was guaranteed for Phil no matter what happened, despite only leading by 2 points. His 4 wins & 2 second place finishes up the that point, meant that he could drop this final round with no negative impact on points whatsoever. Callan, who was the unfortunate in 2nd place in the series, could do nothing to grab back the deficit, but was himself guaranteed of 2nd place overall as well.

Which leads us to the final spot on the podium, and this was an actual nailbiter with Bruce & yours truly both locked together on points after round 6 with all to drive for in round 7.

Unfortunately this battle too proved to be a anticlimax, as Bruce simply didn’t show up and forfeited his stake on 3rd place with nary a whimper.
Anyway, to the round itself, and it was Phil stamping his authority over the entire series by taking out yet another win in round 7 by a total of 4 laps, which was well clear of 2nd place getter, the writer, on 131 laps for the night. 1 lap back in 3rd, after wrestling with his vehicle all night, was Callan on 130 laps.

A sense of Deja-vous was seen in the 4th & 5th battle, as once again it weas Adrian & Rob tied on 128 laps each, with once again Adrian winning the on track battle by less than a foot again to grab 4th from the hapless Rob in 5th.

Blair, once again, managed to rack up a lap total that was unobtainable by anyone else (ie, no-one else finished on 126 laps !) and so reserved 6th place all to himself. 1 lap back on 125 laps, Schoee was in a similar boat, and so his 7th place was no in any danger on being stolen on track position either.

After this,  bit of a gap (5 laps) back to Luke with his 120 total being good enough for 8th, before the final shared battle for the night was fought between Rhys & JB over 119 laps. It was JB grabbing 9th on track though, with Rhys locking up the final top 10 position in the round.

The wrap up the round & series, Dave Gray on 102 laps for 11th.

The series washup saw Phil’s unveiling of the new Scaleauto Lamborghini prove to be a revelation in the field, and certainly pushed the previous class of the class, the NSR AMG (including the previous series winner) back to being also rans.

Phil 1st, Callan a battling 2nd & last series winner myself, a lucky 3rd.

Will be interesting to see how many Scaleauto models make an appearance in the field the next time this series is run……if any are available that is !!!

Final Series - Top 3
