Race Report - Round 1
So, first round of the next new series this week & it was the many vibrant coloured liveries of the JGTC/GT3 cars that hit the track. And what a field it was for round 1. There were McLarens, & Mercedes, & McLarens & Aston Martins, & McLarens, & Nissans, & AUDIs & McLarens. Much variety.
So many cars that the writer was starting to get RSI by the time he entered all the drivers into the start list…and then just as we were finally starting to get ready to race, Bruce pipes up that he might like to race tonight as well…….so I still managed to miss one driver after all.
Scrutineering took place, and due to the size of the field, half an hour later we were kicking off with a shortened format (2.5 min) heats.
Right from the opening heats, things looked ominous for anyone not driving a McLaren as first Callan & Phil & then Bruce posted very good lap times & lap numbers. Bruce in fact held top spot on account of being the first to complete his 3 heats & set a very competitive total for all drivers to try to beat.
Drivers came & went…..many, many drivers, driving many, many McLarens (oh & a couple of other cars), but no-one could touch Bruce's total of 66 laps despite a valiant effort from Ben who threw his McLaren around with almost reckless abandon to fall just 1 lap shy of Bruce with an excellent 65 laps.
It wasn’t until the very last heat and Callans return to the track that both Ben & Bruce were surpassed. Callans 68 laps gave him a 2 lap win for the round ahead of Bruce, with Ben grabbing his first podium spot in 3rd . Well done !
The next few placings were very tight, as always seems to be the case with this series. Despite not being a rapid class, it always produces some very close racing. The battle for 4th was the first of these with Adrian & Phil sharing 63 laps each & fastest laps within 4 - 1/100ths of each other (Adrian 6.545 & Phil 6.589). Adrian grabbed 4th in the end from Phil in 5th.
The writer slotted into 6th all alone on 61 laps, ahead of another battle royale between DB & Rob for 7th & 8th. Both notched up 60 laps with DB grabbing 7th from Rob in 8th on track position.
In 9th on 59 laps & again all alone was JB ahead of yet another 2 way fight for the last spot in the top 10 between Dave Gray & Rhys. These 2 shared 57 laps overall, but it was Dave Gray who took 10th from Rhys in 11th by virtue of driving further around lap 58.
Northern visitor Dennis Murray was the best of the next bracket of drivers, with his 56 laps grabbing him 12th, while Blair slotted into 13th on 55 laps. Thomas won the father/son battle this week with 49 laps for 14th, ahead of Samuel in 15th on 43, while Luke struggled with tyre grip (or lack of it) during his 40 lap 16th place.

Race Report - Round 3
3rd round of the series this week & the first running in the extreme altitude & rarefied air of the Sorell Creek track. It would be interesting to see what effect the lack of oxygen had on the cars &/or the drivers. That and a weeks break.
For the most part heats progressed quite well without too many dramas, until the writer (& host) left the room to check on supper…at which point apparently all hell broke loose & I arrived back to the racing to find that I’d missed approximately none of the racing. I believe there were two aborted attempts to start the heat in question before it actually got going.
In the racing, series leader Callan struggled with the lack of top end speed on the longer circuit this week, and it was the obvious extra pace of the McLaren of Ben & the AMG of Rob that made best use of the longer straights on this track. Then it came down to the simple (or not so simple) matter of not falling off for these 2 speed freaks to make best use of their pace advantage….which they did this week & in the end it was Ben taking out his first round win with a total of 105 laps from Rog in 2nd on 103 laps for the night. Callan battled hard with DB for 3rd with both ending up on 101 laps, but it was Callan than took the final podium position on track position from DB in a very good 4th.
Bruce was next in line, just 1 lap back on a round 100 and in 5th, with the writer & Adrian in another close battle for 6th with their shared total of 97 laps. I just managed to hold onto 6th on track this week with Adrian slotting into 7th.
Rhys was well clear of any other drivers in 8th on 95 laps, 5 laps ahead of Dave Gray & Blair in solid runs of 90 laps. Dave grabbed 9th & Blair took out the final top 10 spot in 10th.
Scotts car showed good pace while racking up 87 laps for 11th with the unlucky John Batich in 12th on 81. A split tyre before the round even started was not a good sign for JB & things didn’t improve from there.
In the seasons points tally Callans lead has been cut to just 1 point over Ben with Rob Golley now jumping up the leaders board to slot into 3rd on 65 points. Callan will be looking forward to the more technical corners & shorter straights of the Stratton Valley circuit next week to make best use of his cars handling. The smokie for the rest of the series could be Bruce Thomas however, when his missed round 2 result is dropped. A 2nd & 5th so far shows that he is the most likely challenger for a top 3 overall….as long as he doesn’t miss another round of course!

Race Report - Round 4
Just over the halfway point of the series & big numbers once again turned out for the round at the Stratton Valley circuit. And who can blame the drivers for this. Always a popular venue due to the lovely fast, flowing track & excellent facilities. It also meant that for the 2nd time running, we had to drop the heat times down to 2 min 30 sec in order to get all drives though in a reasonable time specifically for those of us who have an early bedtime.
Quick progression through the heats was not helped however by the organizer omitting Caines name from the original driver list & so we still had to run a 2nd batch of heats at the end of the main round so Caine (who was waiting very patiently) to run his heats.
We finally managed to get though everyone however, and in the standings for this week, it was Bruce again who continued his rich vein of form in this car, and he took out the round with a very consistent total of 66 laps. Battling it out for 2nd & 3rd were Callan & Rob Golley with a shared total of 65 laps, however it was Callan who grabbed the place on track position. On 64 laps & all alone in 4th was Ben, ahead of a tough fight for 5th & 6th between Caine & DB on 62 laps apiece. In a great showing after a break it was Caine who grabbed the place on this occasion from DB in 6th.
It was even tighter for 7th-9th with 3 drivers finishing up on 61 laps at then end of the racing. Adrian & JB finished on the same corner on the same piece of track to share 7th place, this relegating myself down to 9th just one corner behind.
All alone in 10th was Rhys with his total on 58 laps, 2 laps clear of Dave Gray in 11th on a good 56 laps for the night.
12th was Blair on 55, a lap clear of Scott in 13th (54) with a 2 way tie on 50 laps between Tom & Luke. Tom took 14th on track however. In 16th with 39 laps, Samuel rounded out the huge field.
In the overall points, nothing much changed in the positions, although Bruce pulled back 1 point on Ben for 2nd & tied up with Rob for 3rd, so interest in the minor placings is a still very much alive. Callan maintains 2 point lead overall, and his recent domination of the results shows no sign of decline.
