Race Report - Round 2
Only round 2 of this years Porsche Cup, and already we’re seeing some encouraging signs of increased competitiveness among entries this year.
Yes, Callan Thomas took out yet another win this round, however it wasn’t without some serious challenges along the way.
The other two drivers to make up the top 3, Phil & JB actually went head to head with each other & Callan over the course of heats 6 through 9 in some wonderful racing. First it was JB & Phil going to battle in heat 6, with JB racking up 23 laps to edge out Phil on 22. Then it was a spectacular 3 way combat in heat 7 as Callan joined the fray. JB & Phil shared the bragging rights this heat with 23 laps each from Callan on the tough Red lane notching up 22. From there it was left to Callan & Phil continuing to trade barbs in heats 8 & 9 & amazingly sharing 24 & 23 laps each in the respective heats. Finally, Callan showed his class when challenged though with his very solid 24 lap total on the final lane (yellow) which was the catalyst for his slender 1 lap win (93 laps this round.
Phils wonderful drive landed him 92 laps & 2nd place this week, just 1 lap ahead of the vastly improved (from last years form) JB in 3rd on 91 laps overall.
In a good 4th, Ben also turned up with good form (& less errors!) to rack up 90 laps, 2 laps clear of Schoee in 5th on 88 laps.
87 laps was popular with Blair, Rob & Scott all sharing this total, however it was very solid drive from Blair who managed to take out 6th place on track position from Rob & Scott in 7th & 8th.
In 9th, Rhys’s 86 laps was not far off the pace either, and it was 3 laps clear of Lukes 84 lap total for 10th.
Dave Gray was next in line on 11th & 75 laps, with the writer suffering an overdue mechanical (body screw) failure leading to his sad 66 lap total over 3 heats & 12th pace for the night.

Race Report - Round 7
Round 7 of the Porsche Cup has well & truly snuck up on us & as we now find ourselves over halfway through the series (year) it’s a good time to take an in-depth look at how things have panned out over the first 6 rounds. Taking up where he left off last year, Callan has dominated so far, with only 1x3rd place finish sullying his otherwise perfect set of finishes.
Last years 3rd place-getter, Phil has made strong improvements this year and his run of 2nd place finishes after an indifferent round 1, shows that he is on the right trajectory.
After these 2, things tighten up somewhat, with a bunch of drivers in the next bracket all having had good results, as well as some not so good, and it remains to be seen who of this bunch can string together enough consistent results in the 2nd half of the year to push up into the reckoning for that last top 3 position.
The 2nd half battle started this week.
And, in a great result for Phil, his total of 112 laps (and a good track position) was just enough to score him his first win of the series. This lap total was shared with Callan, but a slight controller problem….ie, not being plugged in, may have affected his overall push for the win. However, it was probably a well-deserved win for Phil, and his fastest lap times showed the extra pace he had this week.
3 laps back, on 109 laps, 3rd place went to Bruce, which was quite a good performance given the track lap counting issues that must have been playing on his mind. Issue solved by the judicious use of an external lighting facility (torch).
The battle for 4th was a good one with 2 drivers sharing the 107 lap total, and both finishing withing a cars length of each other on 1 corner. In the end though, it was the writer who took the place ahead of the very hard charging DB, whose lap times seemed to magically drop half a second every time someone came up to overtake him.
6th & 7th, was another tight battle between Rob & Schoee, and their shared 102 laps was also decided on track position, with Rob the victor this time round.
In an incredible result, it was yet another shared lap total (3rd in a row) that highlighted the struggle for 8th & 9th . This time it was Blair & Adrian on 101 laps each, with Blair (8th) being the beneficiary on track position from Adrian in 9th. Adrian looked to have re-discovered some of his 2024 car pace early on in the heats, but this was unfortunately balanced out by a couple of de-slots into the weeds that surround the Gotham Park track surface……with the usual devastating resultant loss of all grip.
Rhys stood alone on 99 laps, which was enough to slot him into the top 10, before the 4th shared lap total in the battle for 11th &12th. This one was between JB & Luke on 97 laps each, with JB coming out on top for 11th, ahead of Luke in 12th.
Chris (Stack) Priest was next in line (13th) on his 94 lap total, with Dave Gray just 1 lap back in 14th on 93 laps for the night.
*** The 2nd class of the evening, GT World Challenge (Aust), was abandoned mid-way through due to power cuts on the circuit. Perhaps track owners might pay the circuit power bill prior to the next meeting……or make a trip to Bunnings (Aisle 53, Bay 1) to source some electrical wizardry from the current century. ***

Round 8 of the year long Porsche Cup series, and now we’re over the halfway point patterns are starting to emerge. One pattern which looks very similar to last year is the pattern that looks like Callan taking out the series. With 6 wins out of 8 his lead in the points tally is significant, and, barring disaster, will only look stronger once 2 worst rounds are dropped from the results table. Phil still battling manfully in 2nd place overall though, and his consistent 2nd placing with 1 win dropped in has him very secure in his points classification.
The rest of us are fighting over the scraps !
Anyway, this round….it was more of the same with Callan taking the win on 94 laps, 1 lap to the good of Phil in 2nd on 93. The smokie in the top 3 this week was the rare appearance of Bruce Thomas. His 3rd appearance in the series, also coinciding with his 3rd x 3rd place finish! His total of 91 laps was shared with the rapid Adrian G, however track position had Bruce locking in the final spot on the podium, with Adrian settling for 4th.
2 laps back and all alone in 5th was the writer, with Schoee another 2 laps back in 6th with his total of 87. The battle for 3rd position overall is now quite close (1 point) between Schoee (3rd) & myself (4th) & looks to be the only top 3 battle that could hold some interest in the back half of the year .
Blair & JB put on a great display in the battle for 7th & 8th with both racking up 86 laps. However, it was Blair who managed those final few extra feet on the track to take the position ahead of JB.
Another shared lap total was the outcome in the 9th & 10th battle with both DB & Rhys ending up on 85 laps…….DB (9th) was the successful driver on track this time round though with Rhys rounding out the top 10.
And finally, the 4th shared lap total of the round (might be some sort of record) was the highlight of the 11th & 12th place dispute. Scott, in his return, took this one out though in 11th ahead of Luke Mac in12th. Their lap total, 84.
Dave Gray unfortunately had braid issues (or possibly controller) which buggerd his round up somewhat.
