Race Report - Round 1
In a stark contrast to the ponderous Scalex V8 Supercars, the debut round of the Sideways Group 5 monsters produced a massive increase in pace, and had some drivers taking a little while to adjust to the speed & handling differential…….as well as marshalls having to lift their game (& reflexes) significantly !
It was quite a decent variety of cars that gathered on the grid for the 1st round of the new series, with BMW M1s (many), Zakspeed Capris (a couple), Ferrari 512s (a couple), Toyota Celica (1), Ford Mustang (1), and a Lancia Stratos.
Once we got to the racing, it was fast, hectic, and surprisingly quite close over most of the field as well. The standout in round 1 however, was the BMW of Callan Thomas. His 131 lap total was made up of very consistent brackets in each heat & saw him take 1st by a clear 3 laps. After this, things tightened up somewhat. In 2nd, with the Mustang, Rob Golley managed 128 laps, 1 lap to the good of Adrian Gray in the 2nd of the M1s (127 laps).
An extremely tight battle for 4th was fought out between myself (yet another M1) & Phil (Celica) with both of us finishing on 125 laps. However, this battle couldn’t be decided at all, as both cars finished at the exact same corner on the track.
In 6th, and just 1 lap back on 124, JBs big Ferrari also showed good pace as he was in turn 3 laps clear of 7th placegetter, Rhys Filbee in the last of the M1s. Another 2 laps back on 119 and in 8th place, DB in the 1st of the Capris.
A tied lap count on 107 between Ben in his Ferrari & Scott in the Lancia Stratos, saw Ben end up 9th, and Scott take the final top 10 position.
Dave Gray in the 2nd Capri also showed good pace at times, and his total of 94 laps, was not helped by some controller issues along the way.
A good start to the series, which will only be enhanced by the addition of some drivers who were missing in action this week.

Race Report - Race 2
Sideways !!!!!......
No, not Bens driving style, although the same word could well be used when describing this! However in this context it refers to the (Racer) Sideways Group 5 series, and the gathering of cars for round 2 held at Sorell Creek this week.
After a slightly depleted field for round 1, it was a much fuller grid that hit the track for round 2 with a total of 15 cars (not all of them BMW M1s either) in attendance for what turned out to be some very close racing indeed.
After all the dust had settled, the usual suspect found his way to the top of the result sheet however, and with his 93 lap total, Callan took out his 2nd win of the series by the margin of 1 lap from the chasing pack.
And what a chasing pack it was nipping at his heels. A bunch finish of 3 drivers notched up 92 laps apiece, with Bruce, Rob & myself all finishing on this number. Bruce it was who grabbed 2nd place on track position however, with Rob slotting into 3rd & pushing yours truly down to 4th. Not before some very good, enjoyable racing took place between Rob & myself however. I actually managed at least 3 or 4 laps racing side by side with Rob without once being punted off on a corner! This must be some sort of record, and it was great competition.
Just 1 lap back & in 5th this week on 91laps, Adrian Gray was 1 lap to the good of JB (90 laps) in 6th. 2 drivers fought it out on 89 laps, with Phil & Rhys relying on track position to decide the placings. Phil it was who took 7th from Rhys in 8th.
Another 2 way battle followed on the 87 lap total, and this time it was DB who grabbed 9th, ahead of a good drive form Luke rounding out the top 10..
The aforementioned Ben Lewis was next in line on 84 laps for the night in 11th, 2 laps clear of Scott in 12th on 84.
Schoees 82 laps saw him finish 13th this week with improvement to come & Blair showed some good pace in the Capri, but a slight lack of consistency saw him end up 13th with his 80 laps for the night.
Only 1 lap back on 79 was Dave Gray in 15th this week.
Overall, for a quick class, there was some very good racing, and no runaway leader on laps.
A weeks break for the is class next week though, as the Revoslot Porsches take centre stage for March at the BatCave.
