Race Report - Round 3

A V8 Super (car) sized field for round 3 this week at the snake pit…sorry Sorell Creek, but with the recent serpent sighting in the vicinity, the snake puns & jokes were flying around freely. All very helpful for the track owner….

Anyway, with drivers all gathered for the fray (some with knee high leather boots on), the round got underway.

Early pacesetter Callan Thomas along with  Dave Schofield & Ben Lewis had a titanic battle for superiority, with all of them eventually finishing on 78 laps for the night. However, all for nowt, as the final driver in the heats for the night, John Batich, strode to the track in heat 12.

Over the course of his 4 heats, JB flew around & maintained great consistency & in the end managed to head all three early leaders off to notch up a total of 80 laps for the night & take out the win (his 3rd in a row) by 2 clear laps.

The battle for 2nd- 4th on 78 laps was decided on track position, and it was Ben who managed to grab 2nd from Callan in 3rd & the unlucky Schoee in 4th.

2 laps back (and lucky to be that close) in 5th was the writer all on his own on 76 laps, 2 laps clear of 6th placegetter Dave Bantoft again on his own on his total of 74 laps.

1 more lap back on 73 was the ANZ Falcon of Bruce Thomas in 7th, 1 lap ahead of Caine Kalbfell on 72 laps in a good return to racing for the year.
The tight racing continued as a 3 way battle for 9 - 11th took place on the 71 lap total, with Blair taking out the position on track form Phil in 10th & the unlucky Scott who experienced a car breakdown in his last heat as he was well on the way to challenging for the top 3.

Dave Gray ended up in 12th just 1 lap back on 70, with Rob Golley in 12th on a lap total of 69.

A shared lap total of 68 between the final 2 drivers summed up one of the closed rounds of driving seen in recent memory, and it was Rhys who ended up with 14th ahead of Luke in 15th for the night.

So, only 12 laps covering the entire 15 driver field, and despite the cars being one of the slowest series on the calendar, they always seem to produce very tight racing.

Round 4 next week at the traditional home of V8 Supercars (well, the ones with a Ford badge anyway)

Round 4 - Gotham Park - 10/2/26

1st  - John Batich
2nd  - Adrian Gray
3rd  - Ben Lewis
Race Report - Round 4

Just over the halfway point for the V8 Supercars, and there are some very noticeable trends already set in place.

The first is the obvious & complete dominance of the series by JB so far, and there was no change in round 4…..barely.

After comfortable wins in rounds 1-3, things were a lot tighter in round 4, as it came down a titanic battle between JB & Adrian Gray in his return to racing. JB set a mark of 79 laps, and with 1 heat to go it was Adrian in a position of having to chase that down. Unfortunately, the power socket on lane 4 was having some serious issues & racing was brought to a halt while a competent & qualified electrician was called into action to perform a complete replacement on the fly. This was done, all the while Adrian twiddling his thumbs waiting or that final heat.

Once we got up & running again Adrian’s final total of 79 laps was exactly the same as JB, however his finishing position was around 1 meter short on track & so in the end had to settle for 2nd.

1 lap back on 78, was the electrician himself, Ben on 78 laps all alone in 3rd.

The battle for 4th – 6th was a 3 way tie with each of Callan, Bruce & Scott racking up 77 laps. However, the finishing order on track was as listed above.
In 7th, Phils total of 75 laps was 1 lap clear of 8th & 9th with Schoee & DB totalling 74 laps each. Schoee took the place on track this time round however in a nice change form recent unlucky results.

Rounding out the top 10 in a good solid run was Luke on 71 laps, 4 laps clear of a 2 way result for 11th & 12th between the writer & Blair which was decided on track.

The final 3 drivers all suffered mechanicals in some respect, and it was Rob Dave Gray & Rhys the unlucky ones this week.

Round 5 - Sorell Creek - 17/2/26

1st - Scott Wyman
2nd - Ben Lewis
3rd - Callan Thomas

Race Report - Round 5

It took until round 5 of the series, but finally the John Batich stranglehold on the V8 Supercar results was broken this week. During  practice there was nothing to suggest anything would change, as his car whizzed around like clockwork looking as smooth as ever on the Sorell Creek circuit. However, once we got into racing, we saw some very uncharacteristic de-slots from JB right from heat 1, and despite his best efforts later on this allowed a trio of quick but more more consistent drivers to push up into the top 3 podium spots this week.

In a reward for this consistency & pace this week, and with a maiden win, it was Scott whose 98 lap total was enough to take out the win by 1 lap from the quick but slightly more inconsistent Ben on 97 laps.

Callans outright pace was his achilles heel against the two Red Bull teammates in 1st & 2nd, but his dependability allowed him to take out the final top 3 spot on 95 laps for the night.

In a damage control drive, JB recovered enough to grab 4th this week with his standalone total of 94 laps. His stranglehold on the series result remains very firm though.

3 drivers battled over the next 3 positions (5-7) on 93 laps, but with Track position deciding the order it was Rob grabbing the place, from Schoee in 6th & the writer in 7th.

4 laps back and in 8th place this week, Phil was also on his own on 89 laps, ahead of 2 drivers sharing 88 laps for the night. Rhys & Dave Gray had a great tussle for 9th & 10th with Rhys eventually grabbing the honours on track from Dave in 10th.

Just 1 lap back on 87 in the pizza delivery van was Luke Mac on 87 laps, with the driver nursing a pile of super supremes on his lap, and in 12th place this week on 78 laps for the night, Tom Males.

Round 6 - Mornington Park - 24/2/26

1st - Adrian Gray
2nd - John Batich
3rd - Dave Bantoft
Race Report - Round 6

Supercars returned to the Mornington Park track this week for round 6 of the series, and in yet another example of how close this series racing is, a total of 4 laps separated the top 8….which goes to show that the slower the cars, the better the racing….well, in terms of competition anyway.

And to the racing, it was once again Adrian Gray showing that his belated return to form in the final few rounds of the series, has robbed us of seeing what could have been a bona-fide challenger to JBs series lead. As it was this week Adrian took out the win on a total of 108 laps, 1 lap clear of a very close battle for 2nd & 3rd. The form of JB was back on show, but it was the surprise packed of DB who had a wonderful run to tie for 107 laps with JB. It was John who took the place on track position however, with DB in 3rd.

Another 2 way tie for 4th & 5th was fought out between Scott & Rob on 106 laps apiece, and it was Scott whose finishing position grabbed the higher place overall with Rob in 5th.

Callan was unchallenged for 6th with his standalone total of 105, but it was once again a battle in 2 for 7th & 8th. This time it was Rhys & Phil all locked together on 104 laps, with Phil locking in 7th from Rhys in 8th.

In 9th was the spectacular, but inconsistent Ben on 102 laps, 2 laps ahead of the slow & inconsistent writers car in 10th on 100 laps. Dave Gray pulled the pin on his night in heat 3 to finish 11th on 84 laps.

So, going into the final round next week, JB has an unassailable lead in the series with a 13 point margin to 2nd. However, the battle for the final 2 podium spots is well & truly alive. Currently Ben sits in 2nd, 1 point ahead of Callan in 3rd, who in turn is just 2 points ahead of Scott sitting waiting to pounce in 4th. Interesting times for next weeks finale!
See you then.

Round 7 - Sorell Creek - 4/3/26

1st - Ben Lewis
2nd - Dave Schofield
3rd - John Batich

Race report - Race 7 & Series Summary
As it was the final round of V8 Supercars this week at the Sorell Creek track, the track owner decided it would an ideal time to introduce a little frivolity to the proceedings, and gave all drivers the option of decorating their cars with a variety of colours by the means of coloured stickers. Co-incidentally the colours almost identically matched the lane colours on this track, and in the main, most drivers decided to match their car decoration with the lane colour that they were driving on! What fun & what a novel & imaginative idea.

Anyway, there were other things to amuse us this week, including the deciding race of the entire series, and there was much on the line…..well, apart from series winner anyway.

With JB in an unbeatable position, it was the battle for 2nd & 3rd that was still up in the air with Ben, Callan, Scott & the recently well performed Dave Schofield, all in with a show of grabbing one of these podium spots.

But it was Ben who put 2nd place I the bag with his win in round 7, and his total of 82 laps was 3 clear of the next best. Next in line &  it was Schoee who put in a very solid performance of 79 laps to grab 2nd place this week, and push his series results up to a 4th place overall.

Incredibly it was a huge logjam on 78 laps this week with 4 drivers sharing this total & fighting it out for 3rd to 6th, with series implications for at least 1 of these drivers.

JB it was who eventually grabbed 3rd this week, by virtue of track position….which was gained on his last flying corner, by flipping his car upside down, & sliding most of the way downhill towards the hairpin ……and going past Callan on his roof. So, Callan was pushed down to 4th as a result of this, which actually didn’t change much overall as he was safely locked into 3rd for the series by this stage as a result of previous heats.

In 5th, also on 78 laps, was Dave Bantoft, again with very little to separate him from the 4th driver on 78 laps, Phil…who ended up in 6th after all of the above.

Rob Golleys early total of 77 laps looked very competitive, for a while, but in the end he was pushed down to 7th, a lap clear of the very noisy Bruce Thomas in 8th with his 76 lap total.

Locked together on 74 laps this week were previous heat winners Adrian & Scott, but both having misfortune this week, with Scott particularly unlucky having a mechanical that affected the final half of his final heat of the night, and thus kyboshed his chances of pushing up into a top 3 series result.
In 11th, Luke notched up 72 laps to finish 1 lap clear of Rhys in 12th, with the very unfortunate Dave Gray a Non-finisher with his connectivity issues in 13th on the night.

End of V8s then, and a hearty congratulations to JB for a dominant series win, one which was well overdue. In fact, JBs first series win since the last V8 Supercar series, the final round of which was actually the first race held on the newly located Sorell creek Circuit back on 15/10/24.
Final Series - Top 3

1st - John Batich
2nd - Ben Lewis
3rd - Callan Thomas
