Race Report - Round 1
New series time !.....is always a good week, as it allows all drivers to start off on the same footing, no points for anyone & the promise of a new series ahead with the possibility that everyone might have a series winner on their hands.
Sadly, it usually takes only about 10 seconds into the first heat for this fantasy to be brutally destroyed for most of us, and this was again the case this evening.
Of course, there were some very valid excuses. When drivers had to cope with the drastic change of moving directly from ramming Trucks around the track, to the elite, cutting edge racers that are the LMP cars, there were always going to be some initial teething problems.
However, there were some new cars to ogle which provided some very nice eye-candy, and it was certainly one the most colourful grids of all of our classes when all were assembled (as seen above).
Once racing started, it went very much as expected, as previous LMP master Adrian Gray unleashed a new Oreca on the series. Having a great deal to live up when compared to his previous, series dominating, Lola, there was a great deal of pressure on the new car to perform. However, this was never an issue as Adrian screamed around the track averaging laps in the 5.4 second range with some dipping into the 5.2s ! His 77 laps for a 2.30min heat was top drawer & saw him take out the first round by 2 laps. The fact that 2nd place-getter Phil (75 laps) was so close with his new car (also an Oreca) however gives him much hope that things might not be all a 1 way street in the series going forward. Phil also notched up laps in the 5.3s and will be one to watch.
Running a tried & true entry again this series was not a handicap for 3rd place-getter Rob Golley however. His well run Lola proved that it still has the pace to be competitive & his 73 laps was also not far off the mark.
The rest of the field were quite closely packed from here down. JB & the writer tied on 70 laps, with JB taking 4th on track & pushing the writer down to 5th. Which was entirely well deserved due to the fact that JB had assisted greatly in repairing my entry just minutes before the racing began. It would have been very poor form for me to knock John off this week !
Just 1 lap back on 69 was Schoee, who in turn was 1 lap ahead of DB in 7th on 68 laps. 1 more lap back was Bruce Thomas in 8th with his 67 lap total. Next in line was Blair on 65 laps for 9th in a good solid start to this extremely rapid series. Dave Gray took out the final top 10 position on 60 laps. Our final 3 drivers Ben, Thomas & Scott had varying levels of bad luck & in order to find a reliable runner I estimate that we saw a good 8 or 9 cars tried over the course of their 3 heats.
Might want to stick with 1 car for the rest of the series guys 😊

Race Report - Round 3
Well it’s been a week’s break by our racing correspondent on the LMP reports, and one thing that has certainly been evident since the last report, is that a lot can change in a very short space of time in this, our most volatile class of car.
Rounds 1 & 2 have seen rapid, winning performances by the new Slot-it Oreca of Adrian Gray, although it must be said, round 2 being a little closer than round 1. However, there was nothing in the wind to suggest that a round on his “home track” would bring about anything else other than a 3rd win a row.
Things didn’t quite pan out that way as the night progressed though. In fact, despite some frantic & erratic driving over the first 2 rounds, it was Ben who limited disasters this week, and proved that in this case, if you throw enough sheer speed at a car, it sometimes bears fruit. His total of 112 laps for the 3 x 2.5 minute heats was 3 laps clear 2nd place. Luckily we weren’t running the full 3 minutes ! In 2nd, and continuing his very solid start to the series, Rob Golley moved up 1 spot this week to notch up 109 laps. A great start building on from his 2x3rd places. In 3rd this week, also continuing a strong start, was Phil on 107 laps, which he shared with the early series pacesetter, Adrian. In a most unusual performance Adrian struggled on the home track, but luckily limited the damage done to 4th place this week. Certainly not the worst result he could have walked away with.
In 5th, Schoee stood alone on 105 laps, and stands at the top of that next bracket of drivers in the battle for 4th place onwards.
Sharing 104 laps in the battle for 6th, was the returning Callan Thomas, along with yours truly, but with a final lap disaster striking one of us, it was Callan who took the position from myself in 7th.
JB in 8th (103 Laps), and Rhys 9th on 100 also had competitive runs, ahead of 10th placegetter Scott on 94.
A good 2 way battle for 11th & 12th was fought between Blair & Dave Gray with both drivers finishing on 93 laps, but it was Blair who took the position based on track. Blair possibly could have finished higher up, however the simple trivial inconvenience of losing his rear wing at one stage during his heat had rather drastic consequences.
Sadly, the design of his vehicle was such that with the loss of the rear wing, it was immediately transformed into the car version of a palindrome and looked the same forwards as it did backwards……which made marshalling it extremely difficult indeed ! (see *photo below):
Tom slotted into 13th on 64 laps, and in 14th the unlucky Bruce Thomas, who was docked his finishing position for having to run 2 cars over the 3 heats.

Race Report - Round 7 & Series Summary
So, after the quiet, unpretentious class of the Tasman series first up, it was time for the exact opposite in the form of the ridiculous rapidity & destruction that is the gooped up madness of LMP cars.
With tonight’s race being the final in the series, what a finale we had in store for us. As it stood before racing, we had two drivers equal on points on top of the standings. Early series leader Adrian Gray, and the current form driver of recent rounds, Rob Golley were tied together on 120 points apiece.
And, in an almost unbelievable co-incidence, both Adrian & Rob were drawn to drive alongside each other in subsequent heats thus replicating the draw in the earlier Tasman Series.
But, I digress, before all this there were many heats to get through and the action in these made rather a mockery of Bruce’s disparaging remarks about the number of crashes in the Tasman series.
There were at least as many bingles in the LMP racing, and due to the grip level & sheer speed of this class, it meant that these crashes were even more severe, spectacular & invariably involved multiple cars.
In any event, all these earlier heats really did were to consolidate minor placings and there were some very solid performances from the likes of John Batich, Dave Schofield, Ben Lewis & Phil Kalbfell.
All eyes then were on Heats 12 & 13 as Adrian & Rob went head to head….and, when all was done & dusted, it was the old slot car racing classic of not coming off that was the difference between 1st & 2nd . Despite Adrian racking up lap times in the 5.3 range, Robs solid 5.5s & 73 laps were enough to grab both the round & the overall win.
In 2nd this week, a great drive from JB, who separated the two protagonists on 72 laps, which boosted his overall results up to 6th, then it was Adrian just grabbing 3rd in a 3 way battle with Phil & Schoee also on 71 laps.
Phils 4th place was enough to lock his 3rd place in the series & Schoee in 5th saw him grab a 5th overall.
Ben was next in line on 70 laps, along with DB but Bens track position meant 6th & locked up 4th in the series. DB was consistent enough, and his 7th place was a familiar finishing position as it was his 4th such result over the 7 rounds.
The writers 69 laps earned him 8th place this week, with Callan Thomas in 9th on 68 laps from Rhys in 10th on 66. In 11th this week & in a good drive, Dave Gray with his 62 lap total, 1 lap ahead of Blair in 12th on 61.
Thomas Males had a triumphant personal 13th place result with his careful 45 lap total & deliberately relegating Bruce to 14th after some lead wire issues meant he was restricted to 36 laps only.
Group C on proper tyres next week !
