Race report - Rounds 1 & 2
No sooner did one rally series finish (4wd WRC cars), than another has begun. This time for the completely different & not the same in any way 2wd WRC Cars……& it was lovely to see all those not identical bodies running around the rally tracks again after a two-year break. Why it seems only a couple of weeks that we saw these cars competing on these tracks….my how time flys.
Round 1 - Rally
Anyway, it was a smooth start to the series with at least two drivers able to complete their first stage on the Round 1 rally……and then came JB.
I’m sure all of us are well & truly old enough to remember vinyl records (well, Callan wasn’t here this week) and the wonderful habit they had of jumping the needle backwards in a never-ending loop when coming across a miniscule scratch? Well, I’m certain that JB felt as though he was in a never-ending loop after coming across his own “scratch on the record”, or track break in this case. After the 5th restarted heat, JB must have thought he was in the movie “Groundhog Day” and was destined to spend the rest of his life driving a rally car around the rally stage at Phils for around 3 quarters of a lap.

What Phils Rally Track Looks Like
What JB actually saw
Anyway….we did eventually get things started & JB finally finished his round & managed to put together a decent time despite the false starts. However, in the Rally stage it was hometown hero Phil who was well clear in 1st with a time of 139.063, ahead of a clear run from Rob Golley in 2nd (150.865) & myself in 3rd (151.515). JB did well to grab 4th, ahead of Rhys and a very tight run for 6th between Chris Priest & Dave Schofield. Chris squeaked into 6th by not much with Dave in 7th.
8th spot went to Adrian Gray ahead of 9th (Dave Gray) with Thomas Males & Scott Wayman in 10th & 11th respectively.
Round 2 – Hillclimb
There were similar names at the pointy end of the hillclimb….with one notable exception. Phil obviously took out the 2nd win of the night in 1st with 165.47 ahead of Rob Golley again in 2nd on 176.821. 3rd spot went to a vastly improved Adrian Gray 188.116) , who it seemed (almost) did a direct swap of spots with the writer…..who will appear a lot further down in this write up.
In 4th & completing a very good comeback was Chris Priest, just ahead of JB. JB, to be fair, was probably a little gun shy by this stage & his hillclimb results were possibly affected by him expecting to come to a halt at any stage….which he didn’t. 6th, was Dave Schofield, from a good drive by Thomas Males in 7th & Scott Wayman in 8th. A small matter of 6 spots worse than the rally stage, and in 9th was myself, proving the age old slot car adage of - “1 de-slot usually leads to 5 or 6 more”
In 10th was Rhys Filbee, leaving me confused as to how anyone could possibly have had a worse run than me…..and then in 12th spot for the round, Dave Gray.
