Race 7 Report & Series Summary
You know how it is………
You know when you come to the final round of a series, and you find yourself thinking that the last 7 rounds have gone very quickly & there is the realisation that you will now have to put your brilliant little car back on the shelf for another 2 years before this series is run again and you find yourself thinking that this series & these cars should be run far more regularly ?
This is not one of those times.
In fact, apart from a very small handful of drivers, the reaction might be something like …..
” 2 years ?....THAT soon ?”
Anyway, I digress, my job is not to highlight the many faults of these cars……they do quite good enough job of that themselves.
There are always, however, exceptions that prove the rule…….and over the 7 rounds there have certainly been those rare few who have discovered the witchery required to enable these cars to perform at a level far above those of the rest of us, and these drivers were again to the fore in the final round of the series.
The red Ferrari of Bruce Thomas has been circulating like a missile all series, and this last round was no exception, his 114 lap total was just enough to pip Adrian Gray for 1st, with Adrian finishing in 2nd place on the same number of laps is his equally quick red BMW M1…..is the a colour pattern going on here ? Callan Thomas finally got a grippy enough surface (some might say overly grippy……most of the rest of us in fact) to show off the BMW 320 to the best of tis ability & finished in 3rd clear on 112 laps. The ever reliable Phil Kalbfell in his own M1 finished in 4th on 110. Rhys Filbee, with a very consistent drive, ended up 5th on 107, 1 lap clear of John Batich (6th) on 106 & Rob Golley (7th) on 105. Dave Bantoft was well clear in 8th on 103 laps, 4 clear of myself in 9th on 98. The top 10 was rounded up by Dave Schofield with 97 laps, just pipping Dave Gary also on 97 in 11th. Thomas Males in 12th totalled 84 laps, ahead of Scott Wyman in 13th on 81 & Dennis Murray, who’s chances of a very good finish were dashed by an electrical fault while on lane 2 & who finished 14h on 70 laps for the night.
In the overall series, it was Bruce’s number of wins over the series that grabbed him the series win, just ahead of the more consistent Phil Kalbfell who finished on the same number of points. The top 3 was rounded out by Adrian Gray who’s series was at times brilliant, but with enough unlucky results to prevent him competing for the absolute top spots.
